The Closet Environmentalist is on a quest to make her clothes last as long as possible so that she doesn't need to waste resources with new clothes. Her first mission in her Green Clothes Series to start "with how we can extract the most life of the stuff that is already in our closet. This means making it last as long as possible, and delay the dreaded moment when your favorite shirt makes you look like a scrub."

[Y]our clothes’ #1 enemy is you wearing them. They get worn, deformed, stretched, pilled, dirty, stained and just plain old. But I have a solution for you. Ready? Take your clothes off! No, really! Take off your clothes as soon as you get home. Slip into something more comfortable *wink wink*. Relax. For example, you can promote some of the stuff you can no longer wear in public to ‘house clothes’.
Consider the benefits:
No grease stains (and smells) on your work outfit
No tomato sauce on your white shirt
Less dirty clothes means you need to wash less
No trying to get your pet’s angora off your pants
No pulled threads/ruined pantyhose from kitty claws

*I always loved how Mr. Rogers came home and changed his sweaters. Everyone in my family changes our clothes when we get home. It is just so much more comfortable than wearing street clothes while trying to relax...plus I am sort of a clean freak in that I hate the idea of both indoor clothes being dirtied outside and outdoor clothing dirtying the places where I sit in my home clothes. I usually change my socks or put on some slippers as well, and wash my face, too. This is especially troublesome when I take the bus in Vancouver everyday. Oh yuck!*

the moment I get home I change into some velure pants and tank top or t-shirt...I wish I could say it was because I wanted to be environmentally friendly but in reality I just want to be comfortable and lazy. LOL.
1I change my clothes because I leave work and go to the gym and have to shower afterwards.
Style Before Comfort!
2I'm with aburnett.. me too!
3I love the feeling of putting on my yoga pants after taking off my work clothes!!!!!!!!!!
4My work clothes are extremely uncomfortable, and curling up on the couch in jeans just doesn't work for me. I've been changing into a tshirt and fleece pants lately when I'm at home.
5ALWAYS! I even change if I've been out in jeans. Home clothes, cooking clothes - I've got them all.
6How funny! When I read the title, I thought you were going to say that we *shouldn't* change clothes at home because of the extra washloads.
I'm happy to read that I'm on the right track.
I definitely have home clothes and not home clothes.
7I change pretty much every day. People comment on how I have things for years and the clothes still don't look worn. That's probably a combo of changing clothes and having lots of them.

I've always had seperate home clothes and out side clothes....and change the second i get back. I love lazing around in sweats.....even though i don't exercise much...or at all ;)i'm not as comfortable in jeans around the house. Glad to see its the right thing to do:)
9I almost always change as soon as I get home. It's just more comfortable, and feels like you've escaped.
I'm surprised (and glad) it's a greener choice!
10When I worked at an office (before having my son), I would most always change into sweats when getting home.
11hum great points!
12We always change into house clothes when we get home. The main reason is cleanliness...we don't want outside germs transferred onto our couches and beds.
13I change for the comfortability part of it. I change into a pair of boxer shorts and t-shirt.
14I change when I get home for extra comfort, just into tracksuit pants and a jacket or something.
15I always change my clothes when I get home! I can't stand being in the same clothes I've worn all day...I have to feel the most comfortable when I'm at home!
16That article had some great tips, thank you. I already dry my clothing outside to save energy, but there were other things in the article that I wasn't aware of. Also, I purchase products from The Laundress and never take any of my clothes to a dry cleaner any more. The Laundress has a fantastic Wool & Cashmere Shampoo that I use for my sweaters. It smells great and leaves my sweaters sooooo soft. Plus, I avoid the environmental impact of dry cleaning. Their website also has a video on how to hand wash your sweaters. Here is their site: http://www.thelaundress.com/
17All the time. I just HATE not being able to wear jeans or comfy clothes, so the first thing I do when I get back home is getting changed.
18Also, I feel that I need to differentiate work from home, and I never feel myself in my work outfit anyway.
i change clothes as soon as i get home, too, except on casual fridays when i can wear jeans to work. i have an affinity for jeans and kitschy t-shirts, so i have a hard time feeling comfortable in my work clothes.
